So. Here I sit. Thinking I might have something to say. First things first, OMG I started working again! Yep. I stayed home with the kiddos for almost 2 years but ultimately felt called to return to work when we completed our most recent move. Some people are cut out to stay home with the kids and some of us just aren't. I will always cherish that extra time I had with the kids, and the time I had to spend on volunteer opportunities, but for now there is no turning back. I'm a mom and I work outside the home. But I don't label myself as a "working mom", because, well because I think labels about what kind of mom I am are silly. I'm a mom. I'm an employee. I'm a supervisor. I'm a daughter, a wife, a sister, and about a zillion other things. So, I don't feel the need to lump "working" and "mom" together, because I don't lump any of my other titles together.
Now, what did I think I wanted to say? What has my head and my heart going so much that I decided to log back in and write a blog post after over a year of not posting?
Kindness. Or the lack thereof. It seems like when I log onto social media, I just see a culture that lacks kindness. Why have so many people's hearts filled with murky darkness? Why when we disagree do we have to jump down each other's throats? Why do we think that by ridiculing those who are different than us that we're going to somehow change their minds to side with us? I see it across all races, all ages, all genders, all religious groups, all political groups. When you feel attacked or talked down to, does that make you say "oh, yeah, I change my mind. You're totally right. Thanks for treating me like total crap to get to me see your point of view. That was so helpful". I'm guessing no. So why do so many people in our country right now seem to think that is the method that will best state their point of view? Have we all forgotten one of the simplest rules of life - Treat others as you wish to be treated.
I truly believe that the root of so many problems in our country right now stem from an inability to act in kindness and a loss of that cardinal rule of life. "Treat others as you wish to be treated".... do you feel you're doing a good job of this? And for those of you who are parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc, are you doing a good job of modeling it for the kids that look up to you? I feel like I do a pretty good job of this, for myself and in the example I set for my kids, but I certainly have room to improve. If we were following that core value, wouldn't this be a better place? Will you join me in trying to add a little more kindness to this world?
At the end of the day, it doesn't truly matter how many laws are passed about things, we need to be raising kids that CARE about others, regardless of ways that they are similar or different. Let's raise an amazing generation.
